California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). Samuel Atkins Eliot earned his Harvard AB 1884. He served as secretary to the President of Harvard from 1884-1885 and as Preacher to the University 1906-1909.
